Be So Useful That Your Absence Creates a Problem
In the modern tech industry, we are obsessed with the “next big thing.” We chase the latest JavaScript framework, the newest cloud service, and the most hyped AI tool. Our resumes swell with acronyms, and our LinkedIn feeds are a constant stream of “I’m excited to announce…” posts.
But there is a silent, pervasive danger in this endless pursuit of novelty. It creates an engineer who is broad but not deep; a developer who is adept at assembling the latest legos but struggles when the foundation cracks. We have become masters of the “syntax puzzle,” solving complex coding challenges in isolation, while often failing to ensure that the system as a whole runs smoothly for the user.
This is a call for a different kind of career trajectory. It is a manifesto for the engineer who wants to build a career of substance, not just a career of trends. It’s about shifting from being a “coder” to being a “problem solver.” It’s about becoming so useful that your absence isn’t just a matter of an open headcount, but a genuine problem for the business.
To achieve this, we need a fundamental shift in how we think about our work. We must move away from the metrics of output—lines of code, PRs merged, Jira tickets closed—and focus on the metrics of impact: system reliability, business value, and user satisfaction.
Here is my guide to building a career that matters.
The Foundation: Mastery Over Trends
Master the fundamentals. Tools change; physics and logic don’t.
This is the most critical piece of advice I can offer. The engineering landscape is in constant flux. Frameworks that were “must-haves” five years ago are now legacy burdens. However, the underlying principles of computer science—data structures, algorithms, network protocols, operating systems, and database theory—remain largely unchanged.
The “Fad” Trap: It is easy to become an expert in a specific framework. It’s a valuable skill, but it’s a rented skill. The framework owner holds the keys to your knowledge.
The “Fundamental” Advantage: When you master the fundamentals, you can adapt to any tool. You don’t just know how to use React; you understand the virtual DOM, state management, and component lifecycle so well that you can debug issues at a deep level or transition to a new library with ease. You don’t just know how to write a SQL query; you understand indexing, query planning, and data normalization.
Think in systems, not silos.
Stop thinking about your code in isolation. A function is just a function until it’s part of an API, which is called by a frontend, which is dependent on a database, which is served by a network. You must cultivate a “systems thinking” mindset. This means understanding the end-to-end flow of data. When you build a feature, you need to know how it interacts with everything else.
The Silo Problem: The frontend engineer blames the API. The API engineer blames the database. The DBA blames the network. This is the blame game of siloed thinking.
The Systems Approach: A systems engineer sees the entire puzzle. They understand the latency of the network call, the load on the database, and the caching strategy. They think about failure modes. They don’t just ask, “How do I build this?” They ask, “How does this change the behavior of the entire system?”
Engineer for the real world.
In a tutorial or a demo, everything works perfectly. In the real world, it rains on your parade. Data arrives late. Networks drop packets. Servers crash. Users do things you never anticipated. Real engineering is about dealing with the messiness of reality.
Data Pipelines: Data isn’t always clean. It’s often incomplete, malformed, or delayed. A great engineer designs systems that gracefully handle bad data.
Testing: Unit tests are great, but they are just the beginning. You must think about integration tests, end-to-end tests, and chaos engineering. Test not just for the happy path, but for the failure paths.
Observability & Scalability: Can you see what your system is doing in production? Can it handle a sudden spike in traffic? These are not “nice-to-haves”; they are core requirements for a production-ready system.
The Implementation: Communication and Business Acumen
Translate complexity.
As engineers, we often speak a language of jargon that is incomprehensible to our business partners. However, the most valuable engineers are the ones who can act as a bridge. You need to be able to explain a technical constraint to a product manager and a business opportunity to a fellow engineer.
To the Business: Avoid technical jargon. Instead of saying, “We need to refactor the monolith to a microservices architecture to reduce coupling,” say, “We need to make some architectural changes to allow our teams to ship features faster and more independently, which will help us launch the new product by Q3.”
To the Team: Be precise and clear. When writing documentation or communicating design decisions, be explicit about trade-offs. Clarity prevents bugs and reduces onboarding time.
Solve business problems, not syntax puzzles.
It’s easy to get lost in the beauty of a clever algorithm or an elegant design pattern. But at the end of the day, our job is to create value for the user and the business.
The Syntax Puzzle: “I spent three hours refactoring this for-loop into a recursive function that uses a custom iterator.”
The Business Problem: “We noticed that our checkout page was taking 5 seconds to load, causing a 10% drop in conversions. I refactored the database queries and implemented a caching layer, reducing the load time to under a second and recovering our conversion rate.”
If your work doesn’t serve a business goal, you are just doing technical exercises. Always ask yourself: “Why are we building this?” The answer should be about solving a user pain point or enabling a business objective.
The Craft: Writing Code for Humans
Write code for the “next person.”
The next person to read your code is likely to be you, six months from now, after you’ve forgotten the intricate details of the logic. Code is a form of communication.
Clean Code: Write code that is simple and readable. Favor clarity over cleverness.
Documentation: Code explains how, but comments and documentation explain why. A clear README file and in-line comments can save a future developer (or your future self) hours of frustration.
Reproducibility: Your environment should be documented (e.g., Docker, requirements.txt). The build process should be a single command. Don’t make the next person guess how to set up the project.
Automate mercilessly.
If you are doing something for the third time, it’s time to automate it. Manual processes are slow, error-prone, and a terrible use of human intelligence.
Eliminate Toil: Automate deployments, testing, and environment setup.
Focus on Innovation: By eliminating the mundane, you free up your brain for the hard, interesting problems. The 10x engineer isn’t writing code ten times faster; they are automating away the work that slows everyone else down.
The Reality: Production and Operations
Design for operation.
A system that works perfectly on your laptop but crashes in production is a failed system. The day a feature ships, the real work begins. You must design systems with the reality of production in mind.
Resiliency: Build systems that can handle failure. Use retries, timeouts, and circuit breakers. “It crashed” is not acceptable if you can design it to “gracefully degrade.”
Observability: Your system must be a glass box, not a black box. This means implementing robust logging, metrics, and distributed tracing. You need to know what is happening without having to SSH into a server to find out.
Learn from production.
Production is your most valuable classroom. There is no better teacher than the real-world data you get from a live system.
Debugging: Treat every production incident as a learning opportunity. Don’t just fix the bug; find the root cause. Write a post-mortem to understand what happened, how it was fixed, and how to prevent it in the future.
Feedback Loops: Use production metrics to inform your roadmap. What features are people using? What are the pain points? Production is the source of truth.
The Mindset: Ownership
Adopt tech with intent.
We all love shiny new toys. But adopting a new technology comes with a cost. It adds complexity, increases maintenance burden, and has a learning curve.
Intent over Hype: Don’t use a new database “just because.” Use it because it solves a specific problem your current database cannot. Adopt tech with clear, objective reasons that tie back to business value.
Take ownership of outcomes, not just tickets.
This is the hardest and most important principle of all. Many engineers view their job as a series of tasks: pick up a ticket, write code, submit a PR, move on. The owner, however, does not stop there. They own the outcome.
The Contrast:
Ticket-Closer: “I merged the PR for the new user registration API.”
Owner: “I implemented the new user registration API. I monitored the error logs for the first 48 hours to ensure it was working. I verified that we are correctly capturing the analytics we need for the marketing team. I updated the documentation so support staff can handle common issues.”
If you were to leave your role tomorrow, would your absence be felt—or just your open headcount? Would a critical project grind to a halt because you were the only one who understood the data model? Would the build process break because no one else knew your manual deployment steps?
The Open Headcount: You are just a cog in the machine. You are replaceable. No one will notice your absence beyond the need to find someone to fill your chair.
The Problem: If you leave, a real problem is created. The system is less reliable. The team loses domain expertise. A key business initiative is stalled.
